Partners in life, now partners in art.
Duo exhibition at Edmond Brussels: 'This is the show & The Show Is Everything'.
A curator might not think to bring this artist couple together under one roof. Yet, exactly seven years (minus one day) after they met at an exhibition in Brussels, Rebekka Vanderhaeghen and Karel De Mulder are presenting a duo exhibition together: This Is The Show & The Show Is Everything.
At first glance, their works seem to represent opposites: meditative sculptures versus a conceptual (and deadly) table; works about the art of letting go versus a book about the urge to touch everything; a masterful choreography versus a fabulous failure. But for those who look deeper, an underlying thread emerges. Both artists strive to make the world a little better, guided by profoundly human insights about connection, holding on, letting go, and love — lots of love.
On one side is Karel De Mulder, a conceptual thinker with a background in the advertising world. As a creative and creative director, he has worked with superstars such as David Hasselhoff, had his work featured on a 1,135 m² canvas on the outer walls of the Louvre, and took over Museumplein in Amsterdam for a day — always in team with fantastic people.
As an artist, he launched his first two books between 2022 and today in collaboration with artist and curator Erik Kessels, and his works have been exhibited multiple times in Brussels, Italy, Amsterdam, Istanbul, and Paris. On December 14, Karel De Mulder will launch a statement piece along with six other works: a table that demands transparency, eliminating hidden agendas, without mercy. Erik Kessels described it as follows: “Warning! This object designed by Karel De Mulder might be the last meeting at a table you ever have. beauty and death combined in a piece of furniture that will do the job.”
On the other side is Rebekka Vanderhaeghen, who has found her own voice after six years of continuing her mother Kaat Tilley’s life’s work. Growing up surrounded by fabrics and theatrical robes, Rebekka, as a young artist, chose to work with models and dancers — this time without clothing: turning the emotional body into her canvas.
Five years after overcoming lymphoma cancer, she has turned her focus to exploring how color, form, and material influence our conscious and subconscious minds. For her, the body and mind are deeply interconnected, abstracted into meditative sculptures that embody unity. Her work invites viewers to pause, reflect, connect deeply with themselves, and contemplate their place in the universe. Rebekka has exhibited her art in Belgium, the Netherlands, and France, with pieces featured in private collections around the world. For this exhibition, she also created a ‘talisman’ necklace and three philosophical rings in silver and gold.
The vernissage takes place on December 14 between 5:00 PM and 10:00 PM in the beautiful Edmond Brussels building, currently home to the sound production house Sonhouse, located at Rue Deschampheleerstraat 26. The exhibition runs until December 22, concluding with the finissage at 5:00 PM until 10:00 PM, featuring a music release and live performance by emerging Belgian music talent Leni Ark at 7:00PM.
